Can I submit a digital photo for US Online Passport Renewal (OPR)?

Yes! The US State Department's Online Passport Renewal (OPR) system requires you to upload a digital JPEG photo file rather than mailing physical prints. The photo must be square (600x600 to 1200x1200 px), under 240 KB, taken within the last 6 months, and adhere to strict biometric rules.

Why does the State Department photo tool crash or give errors?

The government's legacy photo cropping tool is notoriously glitchy, fails on newer image formats (HEIC from iPhones), and often miscalculates head sizes. EasyPassPhoto uses modern AI algorithms to reliably process photos from any phone or camera into government-compliant files.

Can I reuse my existing passport photo for my renewal?

No. Government rules mandate that your renewal photo must have been taken within the previous 6 months. Submitting the photo from your expiring 10-year passport will result in an immediate application rejection.

FAQ

Passport Renewal Photo Questions

Can I take my passport renewal photo with my smartphone? ▼

Yes! The State Department specifically endorses taking photos with smartphones for Online Passport Renewal, as long as it is not a handheld selfie and follows the standard lighting and background guidelines.

What if I am renewing by mail instead of online? ▼

If you are mailing Form DS-82 with your old passport book, you will need physical 2×2 inch photo prints. Download our 4×6 print sheet and have it printed at CVS or Walgreens for 39 cents, then staple one photo to the application box using 4 vertical staples in the designated corners.
